We also had a very busy and productive day in class! Students eagerly presented (and I recorded) their 3D Robot commercials that they have been working so hard on for the past few weeks! They did a fantastic job!
We also had a very fun science experiment today where we discussed the effects of water pollution and were able to see just how hard it is to clean out dirty water. Each group of students were given a tub of water that had been "polluted" with plastic, garbage, "toxic waste" (food colouring) and oil (cooking oil). They were then challenged to get the water as clean as possible using a variety of tools, such as: tongs, sponges, coffee filters, and strainers. They quickly realized that the smaller pieces were extremely difficult to get out, and that the oil and food colouring was impossible with the tools that they had.
Students had such rich questions and discussions with this experiment! One of the most thought provoking questions was actually asked in disgust as we made our polluted water: "Who would drink water like that!?" Students then realized that animals who live in polluted places and even some humans in poor countries OR in very polluted cities have NO CHOICE and must drink the dirty polluted water. They also noticed that i took almost no time at all to pollute the water, but even after 15 minutes of hard work they couldn't clean it: lesson learned was that it is easier to try and prevent pollution than to try and clean it up!
We learned a lot today and had so much fun!
