Just wanted to say a big congratulations to all of our students at St. Francis of Assisi who celebrated their first communions today!! It was a beautiful day, and wonderful ceremony and everybody looked fantastic!

Busy Day!
What a beautiful day out today! Today we were able to sneak outside a bit early at the end of the day to get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful weather.
We also had a very busy and productive day in class! Students eagerly presented (and I recorded) their 3D Robot commercials that they have been working so hard on for the past few weeks! They did a fantastic job!
We also had a very fun science experiment today where we discussed the effects of water pollution and were able to see just how hard it is to clean out dirty water. Each group of students were given a tub of water that had been "polluted" with plastic, garbage, "toxic waste" (food colouring) and oil (cooking oil). They were then challenged to get the water as clean as possible using a variety of tools, such as: tongs, sponges, coffee filters, and strainers. They quickly realized that the smaller pieces were extremely difficult to get out, and that the oil and food colouring was impossible with the tools that they had.
Students had such rich questions and discussions with this experiment! One of the most thought provoking questions was actually asked in disgust as we made our polluted water: "Who would drink water like that!?" Students then realized that animals who live in polluted places and even some humans in poor countries OR in very polluted cities have NO CHOICE and must drink the dirty polluted water. They also noticed that i took almost no time at all to pollute the water, but even after 15 minutes of hard work they couldn't clean it: lesson learned was that it is easier to try and prevent pollution than to try and clean it up!
We learned a lot today and had so much fun!

Red and white day tomorrow
Thank you to all of the students who brought in Plastic Bags for our challenge! Unfortunately we lost the challenge to Holy Cross School (by just a little bit!) and will be wearing our rival schools colours. So please dress your child in red or white for tomorrow (Thursday)!

April 24th
I hope that everybody has been enjoying the beautiful, sunny weather! Homework and word wall words for the week have now been posted :)
We had a wonderful (and busy!) day today in class. We have started our measurement unit in Math and students have been working on a pretty neat project. Last week they drew outlines of their bodies on large pieces of paper, and today we began measuring how tall everybody was! We focused today on non-standard ways to measure and students were able to come up with many different ways we can measure our height (i.e. using cubes, markers, straws, etc..). Students had lots of fun doing this!

We also had a wonderful afternoon meeting with Ms. Victoria from Divine Infant church! She came over to help prepare our students for their upcoming First Communions this weekend. Students even got to practice receiving the host. I can't wait to see everybody who will be celebrating their first communion on Saturday!

Welcome Back
Welcome back! I hope that everybody had a wonderful Easter Weekend.
Homework and new word wall words will be posted shortly for the week :)
This week we will be starting a new topic in math: measuring length, area, and perimeter. Students will be writing a short test on Friday to finish off both our units on 3D geometry and on Adding and Subtracting double digit numbers using regrouping and non regrouping questions. For our 3D geometry students will need to identify some simple 3D shapes (cone, cylinder, sphere, cube, pyramid, rectangular prism) and know how to count vertices, edges, and faces. We will be reviewing these concepts in class as well, and our weekly homework will also give students a chance to review.
This week is our LAST week with our CYC students, Miss. Dawson and Miss. K. We will definitely miss their help in our class!
Our class had some exciting events happen last Thursday that I wanted to share with you. First, we had two winners this month at the "Caught You Caring" assembly! Congratulations to Dahlia and Sinachi for having their names drawn this month... both wins were very well deserving! I was happy to know that many of my students had a good chance of having their names pulled this month with all of the caring I have been noticing lately; keep up the great work!
At the same assembly we also got a chance to witness the "pie in the face" fundraiser that our school was holding to raise money for our Lenten project. Students were challenged to raise $500 in one week and earned raffle tickets with their donations to have a chance at putting a pie in the face of either Mr. Wayne, Mme. Parent, or Mrs. Harrington. Not only did our school beat the challenge, but we had a student from our class have her name drawn to throw a pie! Congratulations to Alexa, it was fun to watch!
Looking forward to a wonderful week with everybody.

Update
Hello!
My apologies for not updating the blog for a while, however you have probably heard by now that I was away Monday and Tuesday as I was very sick! I am happily back in the classroom now :)
Due to my illness I was unable to get the weekly homework ready in time so there will be no homework this week. I will post next weeks homework on Tuesday.
Please note that we are doing a few different collections/fundraisers this week!
1) We are collecting plastic bags and are competing against Holy Cross to collect the most bags. Keep bringing them in!
2) Tomorrow (Thursday) is the last day to bring in Toonies to purchase raffle tickets to win a chance to pie our custodian in the face! Our goal is to raise $500 towards our Lenten project.
I am looking forward to updating the blog often again now that I am feeling better :)

Monday Morning Updates
I hope that everybody enjoyed the wonderful weather on Sunday! Looks like today may be another nice one for us to enjoy!
Weekly homework and word wall words are now posted. Previous homework that has been handed in will be sent back some sometime this week.
On Friday we had some special visitors at our school and they visited our class as we worked on our 3D Robot projects. The visitors were very impressed with everybody's creations, and students did a great job answering any questions they had! Great job!
On Friday we also did our weekly math centers where we got to practice our Math concept in fun ways. Here are just a few examples of what we did last week:
Students were given 3D shapes, a whiteboard and some markers and were left to come up with their own fun at this center. The students amazed me with the many different things they did! Some experiments with stacking, rolling, and sliding experiments, some drew and labels the 3D shapes, and others build structures with them. Great job!

2D shape logic puzzles. Can you fill in the shape using the 2D shapes?
Challenge: How many different ways can you make a hexagon?
I am looking forward to another fun week full of learning opportunities!
